FedEx Electric Cars
In our day and age, fossil fuels are coming close to being exhausted, and the world is realising that we have to think of some other options to keep our world functioning, for when they are used up. With new technology popping up in industries across the board, the car industry is no different, but new changes are being implemented into our general vision on a daily basis. FedEx announced this week that they have added four electric delivery vans to their US fleet, for shifts using these vehicles to begin in early June. Described by the New York Times as ‘the cutest vehicles we have ever seen’, the vans have been designed by Modec, a UK based company, and can run up to 100 miles if they have been fully charged overnight. They will be trialled along with the fuel consuming vehicles in the Los Angeles base, and if they are successful, the new technology will be implemented state wide. There are currently ten in circulation here in England, which are successfully out delivering packages to all corners of the UK on a daily basis, with no apparent glitches.
FedEx currently are at the forefront of environmental saving technology, as most of their vans are hybrids, but if the plan goes successfully they hope to roll out fleets of electric cars all over the world.
With one van currently consuming a house worth of energy, this isn’t the definitive plan for the future. Scientists need to develop these tools to consume less electricity, but at the moment, it is a much safer and more environmentally friendly option than the current petrol or diesel model.
If worldwide companies are implementing these new technologies, then it shouldn’t be long before we start to see them in the consumer market. While they save on consumable fuels, they should also provide a cheaper option for car tax and Car Insurance too.
