1914 Detroit Electric car drives silently away from its garage

This 1914 Detroit Electric duplex brougham was originally owned by famous General Electric scientist Charles Proteus Steinmetz. He was chauffeured in it around Schenectady, NY, until his 1923 death. The car was found derelict in a field in the 1970s, and restored by Union College, which uses the Detroit Electric in its graduation ceremonies. The rest of the year, it is displayed in the Edison Tech Center. The car is run by an electric motor powered by 14 6-Volt lead-acid batteries. It is steered via a tiller: push forward for left turns, pull back for right turns. There are two sets of controls, so it can be driven from the front or rear seats. The top speed is about 30 mph, and it can be driven about 25 miles. Electric cars were considered the most refined form of transportation in the early 1900s, and the only one suitable for women to drive, since they required no engine cranking or boiler stoking. At a media preview the night before the 2011 New York Auto Show, Porsche executives drove their re-created 1900 Semper Vivus series hybrid across the room to their latest hybrid, the 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. The Semper Vivus (“always live”) is widely acknowledged to be the world’s first hybrid, built in 1900 by Ferdinand Porsche when he worked for the Austrian automaker Lohner. Now housed in the Porsche Museum, the Semper Vivus took three years to re-create from just a handful of photos and drawings. Its twin DeDion Bouton 1.7-liter single-cylinder engines power generators that flow electric current to the car’s electric front wheel motors. Columbia Engineering School Hosts Panel Discussion on New York and the Electric Car Columbias Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science The panelists include Earth Institute Director Jeffrey Sachs; Doherty Senior Scholar in the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Adjunct Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences Roger Anderson; Line Director for General Motorss Chevy Volt electric car Tony Posawatz; Director of Research and Development, Power Supply, at ConEdison, Arthur Kressner; and Earth Institute Director of Sustainable Mobility Lawrence Burns. Keynote speakers include John Gilbert, Executive Vice President of Rudin Management. The panel will be moderated by Kathleen Deveny of Newsweek magazine. GMs Chevy Volt, which will be available starting in the fall of 2010, will be on display at the engineering schools plaza near the entrance to the Mudd building.
