The Semper Vivus (“always live”) is widely acknowledged to be the world’s first hybrid, built in 1900 by Ferdinand Porsche when he worked for the Austrian automaker Lohner. Now housed in the Porsche Museum, the Semper Vivus took three years to re-create from just a handful of photos and drawings. Its twin DeDion Bouton 1.7-liter single-cylinder engines power generators that flow electric current to the car’s electric front wheel motors.
